How to Apply: Application Procedures & Deadlines

A complete application consists of:

  1. American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) Application
  2. SUNY Downstate Medical Center Supplemental Application also known as the "secondary" application.
  3. A nonrefundable Supplemental Application Processing Fee of $80 or an AMCAS fee waiver
  4. Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores as required
  5. Letter of recommendation from premedical advisor or committee (we accept letters sent via the AMCAS letter service, Virtual Evals, or Interfolio), or two individual faculty letters as required. Read the requirements for letters of recommendation very carefully as your letter may not be accepted if it does not meet our guidelines.

Accessing the Admissions Checklist

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that a complete application is on file. Your SUNY Downstate application checklist is activated once we receive the AMCAS application. You will be able to login with your assigned Username and Password.

If you no longer wish to have an active application with us, you should withdraw your application in order to avoid further processing or emails, and to benefit other applicants. Please notify the Office of Admissions immediately by email or fax to (718) 270-4775.

Note: All mail is delivered to SUNY Downstate's central mailroom and then sorted for delivery to individual offices. Confirmation of receipt of items is via your web checklist. Allow five business days for processing.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center encourages early application. We recommend that applicants have a completed application on file before October 15th for maximum benefit. Click here for a complete list of deadlines.

Does Downstate have rolling admissions?

We have a modified rolling admissions process. Acceptance letters are issued beginning in mid-October and continue until the class is filled. An alternate list is also established at the end of June.

Admission Deadlines

June 1, 2011 Earliest date to complete an AMCAS application.
August 1, 2011 Latest date for Early Decision applicants to file an AMCAS application.
August 12, 2011 Latest date for Early Decision applicants to have a completed application on file.
December 15, 2011 Latest date for applicants to have a completed application on file at AMCAS.
December 15, 2011 M.D. / Ph.D Latest Date to complete application with School of Graduate Studies.
February 1, 2012 Latest date to have a completed application on file in the Office of Admissions.
Mayl 15, 2012 Latest Date to have a completed MPH application on file with the MPH Program for the June class.
May 2, 2012 Latest date to request a deferred acceptance.
May 15, 2012 Latest date for the $100 tuition deposit refund.
