Application Procedures

  1. Submit a SUNY Downstate Transfer Application form prior to May 1st
    A non-refundable application fee of $80 must be submitted with the application. Make your check or money order payable to “SUNY”.

  2. Forward official transcripts from all colleges attended: undergraduate, graduate and medical.

  3. Forward a letter of recommendation from your Health Professions Advisory Committee. In the absence of such a committee, letters from faculty in two different premedical science (biology, chemistry or physics) departments in which you have taken courses will be acceptable.

  4. Forward a letter of recommendation from your medical school’s Dean’s Office (Student Affairs or Academic Affairs).

  5. Forward official scores from your MCAT.

  6. Forward proof of registration to take Step 1, USMLE prior to July 1st.

The deadline for completed applications (except for Step 1 scores) to be on file in the Medical School Admissions Office is May 1st. If you decide to withdraw your application, notify the Admissions Office immediately to avoid further processing and to benefit fellow applicants. The review of transfer applications begins in June. All applicants are notified of their final status, in writing, by late June. We will not know the exact number until mid-May..

The third year begins with a mandatory course entitled “Transition to Clerkship,” which will be held the week of July 1st. Matriculation is conditional pending our receipt of passing scores on Step 1, generally in August. Therefore, clerkship rotations for accepted transfer students will generally begin August.
