Accelerated Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in NursingThe Accelerated BS in Nursing Program is open only to applicants who have earned a baccalaureate degree, in any discipline, by the date of enrollment and who have met prerequisite and admission requirements by the start of registration. It is a 15-month, full-time program that prepares beginning practitioners to assume a variety of roles in different settings. Admitted students take 60 credits of concentrated nursing courses in residence at Downstate and transfer in 65 credits to qualify for the BS degree. The program provides a sequence of professional nursing development that proceeds from (1) understanding the theoretical basis for professional nursing practice; to (2) acquiring knowledge and skills for professional nursing practice; to (3) applying knowledge and skills to the practice of nursing. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Upon passing this exam, graduates will have the license to practice as registered nurses. Individuals wishing to pursue advanced study will be eligible to apply for admission to a master of science program in the College of Nursing in the fields of Master of Science Degree, nurse practitioner, nurse-midwifery, or nurse anesthesia.
