Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree Program

Admissions Requirements

  1. A baccalaureate degree in another discipline from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) such as the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, North Central Association, Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. 
  2. You must submit two letters of recommendation. SUNY Downstate Medical Center has moved toward exclusive use of electronic
    recommendation submissions. Your letters should be written by a current/former College Science Professor or an employer/supervisor, or another college professor. Recommendations by individuals other than your College Professor or Employer/Supervisor will NOT be considered. Please visit the application instructions to learn more about the letter of recommendation requirements.
  3. A minimum undergraduate cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  4. A grade of “C” or better in the following prerequisite courses:

* Bacteriology does not meet this requirement

** Life Span Developmental Psychology (course must cover from Birth to Aging) or Child Psychology & Adult Development or Child Psychology & Psychology of Aging.

*** In addition to English Composition, if your college has writing intensive courses listed and described as such in their catalog, these are also acceptable to fulfill the English Composition requirement.

PLEASE NOTE: All prerequisite science courses must have been completed within the past seven (7) years of the date expected entry into the program. Any exceptions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the faculty of the College of Nursing.

Required Examinations

Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS)

  • ATI TEAS measures basic essential skills in the academic content area domains of Reading, Mathematics, Science, English, and Language usage
  • The minimum acceptable passing scores for Math and Reading are 80%
  • To register go to www.atitesting.com and choose "Register for TEAS with PSI"
  • You may also call (800) 667-7531 to register
  • A ATI TEAS on-line Practice Assessment is available for purchase on-line www.atitesting.com
  • The deadline to take or retake the ATI TEAS is November 30, 2017. An applicant may only retake the ATI TEAS once within an Admissions Cycle.
  • The ATI-TEAS test is valid for two (2) years from the date originally taken.
