Graduate Nursing Programs: Admissions Requirements

Degree level: Master of Science

The College of Nursing will only offer a one-day, full-time program for the following programs: FNP, WHNP and the Advanced Certificate programs in FNP and WHNP.

There are currently three Graduate Nursing Programs and two Advanced Certificate (Post Masters) programs

  • Nurse Practitioner
    • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
    • Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP)
  • Nurse Anesthesia (NA)
  • Nurse Midwifery MS /Advanced Certificate in Midwifery
  • Family Nurse Practitioner Advanced Certificate [Post-Masters] (FNPC)
  • Women’s Health Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Advanced Certificate [Post-Masters] (WHNP)

Entering Class Admission Criteria (FNP / WHNP / NMW)

  1. A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (B.S.N) from a college or university accredited by a regionally accredited organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) such as the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, North Central Association, Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. 
  2. You must submit two letters of recommendation. SUNY Downstate Medical Center has moved toward exclusive use of electronic recommendation submissions. Your letters of recommendation should be written by: (a) professional colleague who can comment on your clinical abilities and/or your potential for success in graduate nursing education and (b) a current/former College/University Professor or an employer/supervisor. Please visit the Graduate Nursing program of your choice for specific application instructions related to the letter of recommendation requirements.
  3. A copy of the New York State R.N. license
  4. A current BLS is required
  5. A minimum of one year clinical experience post baccalaureate degree is preferred
  6. A cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred

The Advanced Certificate [Post-Masters]: FNPC / WHNPC programs requirements are as follows:

  1. A Bachelor of Science and a Masters degree in Nursing or in one of the advanced practice nursing roles
  2. Practicing as a Professional Nurse or Advanced Practice Nurse
  3. You must submit two letters of recommendation. SUNY Downstate Medical Center has moved toward exclusive use of electronic recommendation submissions. Your letters of recommendation should be written by: (a) professional colleague who can comment on your clinical abilities and/or your potential for success in graduate nursing education and (b) a current/former College/University Professor or an employer/supervisor. Please visit the Advanced Certificate Graduate Nursing program of your choice for specific application instructions related to the letter of recommendation requirements.
  4. A New York State R.N. license
  5. A cumulative Master's level Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00
  6. National Certification in your specialty area of advanced nursing practice
