SUNY Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress - College of Medicine

Students enrolled in the College of Medicine who are recipients of federal student aid must meet the standard of satisfactory progress as established by the Academic Promotions Committee in order to be eligible for federal student aid (Title IV and Title VII). The academic requirements for the M.D. include the satisfactory completion of the curriculum designated by the faculty. The progress of each student working toward an M.D. degree is monitored periodically and at the end of the year by the Academic Promotions Committee to review progress toward promotion or graduation. The normal time frame for completion of required course work for the M.D. degree is four academic years.

Before advancing to the next academic year, students must pass all courses of the preceding year. Depending on the extent of the academic deficiencies, students will either (a) be required to make up the deficiencies by reexamination and/or additional work as required by the department(s) involved; (b) repeat the year, or (c) are dismissed from the College. Such requirements are imposed upon the recommendation of the Academic Promotion Committee to the Dean of the College of Medicine. Information regarding the grading system, student evaluation and promotion, licensing examination requirements and leaves of absence policies can be found in the Downstate Medical Center Bulletin for the College of Medicine and the Student Handbook published by the Office of Student Affairs.
