 ASCO Medical Student Rotation,

funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure ®

The Medical Student Rotation (MSR) provides clinical research oncology rotations for U.S. medical students from underrepresented populations in medicine who are interested in pursuing oncology as a career. A mentoring component is included, whereby award recipients are paired with a clinical oncologist who will provide onsite supervision during the rotation as well as ongoing academic and career guidance. 

The oncology rotation can take place at the applicant's home institution or at another institution at which the mentor has agreed to host a program participant. ASCO will provide assistance in arranging mentoring partnerships or candidates may preselect a mentor.

Award Total:  $8,500 (A stipend of $5,000, an allowance of $1,500 for future travel to the ASCO Annual Meeting, and $2,000 provided for mentor support)

Eligibility Criteria

  • To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Be enrolled in a DO or MD U.S. medical school program.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident.
  • Be part of an underrepresented population as defined by the program criteria. For the purposes of this program, underrepresented population is defined according to the AAMC definition, currently specified as those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the field of medicine relative to their numbers in the general population. Races/ethnicities that have been identified include but are not limited to: American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. Applicants self-identify and recipients are drawn from this pool.
  • Have a record of good academic standing.

PEDIACTRICS RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY offered by the American Pediatric Society (APS) & Society for Pediatric Research (SPR)

The APS and SPR are offering a medical student research program to encourage gifted medical students to consider careers in research related to pediatrics. this program is specifically designed for students seeking a research opportunity at an institution other than their Medical School. The program gives students $58.37 per day for a maximum stipend of $4,312 and enables then to spend eight to ten weeks, at 40 hours per week, in a research environment. They currently have nearly 300 laboratories and research experiences throughout the US and Canada available to students. The number of students funded in the year 2010 will depend on the availability of funding.

2010 – 2011 Commonwealth Fund/ Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy (CFHUF).

Supported by The Commonwealth Fund, administered by the Minority Faculty Development Program at Harvard Medical School, this innovative fellowship is designed to prepare physicians, particularly minority physicians, for leadership roles in formulating and implementing public health policy and practice on a national, state, or community level.

Fellowship Eligibility Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Board eligible or board certified physicians
  • Experience in minority health issues
  • Interest in health policy and public health
  • Strong academic and leadership skills
  • Intention to pursue career in public health, health policy, or academia


Five one-year, degree-granting fellowships will be awarded per year. Fellows will complete academic work leading to a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at the Harvard School of Public Health, and, through additional program activities, gain experience in and understanding of major health issues facing minority, disadvantaged, and underserved populations. CFHUF also offers a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree at the Harvard Kennedy School to physicians possessing an MPH. It is expected that CFHUF will support the development of a cadre of leaders in minority health, well-trained academically and professionally in public health, health policy, health management, and clinical medicine, as well as actively committed to careers in public service.

DIVERSITY IN PEDIATRICS EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Purpose

The University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital (TCH) believes that diversity is a value that is central to its educational, research, service and health care missions. The Diversity in Pediatrics Committee’s mission is to increase diversity at the School of Medicine and TCH to both better reflect the community we serve as well as to increase cultural competency in the health care workforce, improve access to health care for poor, minority and under-served populations and, ultimately, eliminate racial, ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in health and health services. As part of this mission, the Diversity in Pediatrics Extern Scholarship was designed to offset the costs of an externship rotation for fourth year medical students interested in caring for medically underserved pediatric populations in Colorado, to help defer the added expense of an away rotation.

Eligibility

Any medical student attending a United States medical school (allopathic or osteopathic), other than the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, who will be a fourth-year student at the time of their externship at TCH is eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Applicants shall meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the medically underserved. Successful completion of Core Pediatrics rotation at home medical school
  • Successful completion of USMLE Part

Award Details

Up to 6 scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded to students who meet the above criteria and have demonstrated a commitment to caring for the medically underserved as a physician. The scholarship funds will be distributed in two disbursements to award recipients. As part of their externship, scholarship recipients will be assigned to a weekly ½ day clinic at a location which serves the medically underserved population of metro Denver. In addition, the recipient will be assigned a resident mentor for the duration of their externship rotation.

Application Requirements

Complete applications must be postmarked no later than 2 months prior to externship start date. The following should be sent in one complete packet or email to either of the addresses below:

  • Completed application form
  • Two Short Answer Essays (500 words or less)
  • Curriculum Vitae / Resume
  • Letter of Recommendation from your Pediatric Clerkship Director (must be sent separately)
  • Confirmation from your medical school that you have successfully completed your Core Pediatric rotation, and USMLE Part 1. This may be in the form of an official transcript, an official letter from your pediatric chair or clerkship director, or incorporated into your Letter of Recommendation from the Clerkship Director (may be sent separately or with application packet).

NATIONAL MEDICAL FELLOWHIPS (NMF)

Key initiatives of NMF include mentored externships that focus on improving the education and experience of minority medical students to improve the quality of service delivery for underserved populations. The GE/NMF Medical Scholars Program enhances the knowledge skills and competencies of health professionals serving a diverse client population nationally and globally and provides a program model of mentored externship experiences for 4th year US minority medical students and improves patient care in partner countries. GE/NMF Medical Scholars complete a two-month elective in Ghana, West Africa, focused on critical regional health care needs.

The GE Medical Scholars Elective in Ghana

A two-month (departing US after Match and returning prior to graduation) clinical/public health elective will be conducted in three districts in Ghana, focused on critical health care needs including HIV/AIDS, diabetes, tuberculosis, heart disease, cancer, and infant mortality. Prior to departure, all 10 Scholars will participate in an intensive orientation session in the US, followed by a briefing in Accra about the Ghana Health Service and their specific assignments. Scholars will have the opportunity to work at two sites. An individual project and a team project are required. Each of the GE/NMF scholars participating in the program authors a report detailing their various clinical findings and experiences. A team project, in collaboration with the district, is required. Team projects will focus on patient care. Students will also benefit from working with mentors.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible candidates must be underrepresented minority students enrolled in their fourth-year in an accredited U.S. medical school (MD or DO). Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement as evidenced in academic transcripts, faculty evaluations, receipt of special academic honors, fellowships, awards or induction into national medical honor societies; leadership as indicated by active participation in international health, community-based activities or initiation of innovative projects; and potential for distinguished contributions to medicine as indicated by participation in research, publications or unique clerkships.

Number and value of the awards

Ten GE/NMF Scholars will be chosen. Transportation, living expenses and a scholarship of $5000 per student is provided to students. All student most complete the full program. Three runner-up will be chosen.

Application and Selection Criteria

Students must be nominated by their medical school dean. Complete applications must be accompanied by a letter of nomination that fully explains the candidate’s academic and leadership accomplishments during medical school, an official academic transcript, a curriculum vitae and a personal statements of at least 500 words, written by the student, that discusses his or her motivation for a career in medicine and commitment to pursue a career in primary care, public or international health. Applicants are ranked by the International Advisory Board based on the strength of their medical school recommendations, personal statement, academic achievements and interviews. Transportation, living expenses and a scholarship of $5000 per student is provided to students.

2010 ASCO Loan Repayment Program, funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

The Loan Repayment Program (LRP) provides repayment of qualifying educational loans to oncologists, or to oncology fellows upon completion of training, who commit to practicing clinical oncology full-time for two years in a medically underserved region of the United States. The LRP will repay up to $35,000 per year for two years (up to $70,000 total) of qualifying educational loans.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of the award:

  • Have completed an approved oncology fellowship training program in the United States
  • Have outstanding qualifying loans obtained for medical education leading to a degree or diploma in medicine
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident
  • Be a physician (have an MD, DO or equivalent medical doctoral degree from an accredited institution)
  • Have a current permanent unrestricted license as a physician to practice in the designated state
  • Be board-certified in an oncology specialty (i.e. med/onc, hem/onc, rad/onc)
  • Commit to practicing clinical oncology full-time for two years in a medically underserved community of the United States as specified by the program criteria
  • Be an ASCO member or become an ASCO member
