AMA Foundation- Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship scholarship

Deadline: April 15, 2008

The following materials need to be submitted to the AMA Foundation on or before their respective deadlines:

  1. Completed application information form (above)
  2. Financial aid statement (appears on page 5 of the application information form)
  3. One page personal statement from the applicant
  4. Letter of recommendation from the dean or dean’s designate
  5. Letter of recommendation from a faculty member 
  6. Medical school transcript.

Metropolitan Life Foundation Awards Program for Academic Excellence in Medicine

This award program was established by the Metropolitan Life Foundation in 1987. Seventeen need-based scholarships are awarded annually to second through fourth-year underrepresented minority medical students who have demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and leadership.

Eligibility Requirements:
The program is open to eligible students in their first, second or third medical school year, who are attending medical schools or have legal residence in cities where Metropolitan Life has a major presence. Applicants must be members of racial or ethnic groups currently classified as underrepresented in medicine. In 2006-2007; the MetLife Foundation gave approval for the following cities: Phoenix, Arizona; Los Angeles, California; San Francisco, California (Oakland/Bay Area); Denver, Colorado; Miami, Florida; Tampa, (St. Petersburg) Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Aurora (Chicago) Illinois; Boston, Massachusetts; St. Louis, Missouri; Albany, New York; Metropolitan New York (including New York City, Southern New York, North/Central New Jersey, Southern Connecticut and Long Island); Rensselaer, New York; Utica, New York; Dayton, Ohio, Tulsa Oklahoma; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Scranton Pennsylvania; Warwick, Rhode Island (Providence); Greenville, South Carolina; Dallas, (Fort Worth) Texas; and Houston, (Austin) Texas.

Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement as indicated in academic transcripts, faculty evaluations, by receipt of special academic honors, fellowships, awards or induction into national medical honor societies; leadership as indicated by active participation in community-based work or initiation of innovative projects in school or community; and potential for distinguished contributions to medicine as indicated by participation in research, publications or unique clerkships. Students must also provide documented proof of financial need, evidenced by receipt of need-based financial assistance prior to being nominated for a scholarship, information provided by the medical school financial aid officer and through documented proof of income.

Number and Value of Award Presented
Up to 17 scholarships of $4,000 each are presented annually.

Application and Selection Criteria:
Students must be nominated by their medical school deans or assistant dean. Schools are required to submit letters of recommendation and official academic transcripts. Candidates must submit scholarship applications, including documented proof of financial need, valid proof of residency (income tax returns or utility bills for the last two years) for candidates who do not attend medical schools in the designated cities, and a curriculum vitae.

The Minority Scholars Award
  • Ten $10,000 scholarships are awarded to first or second year medical students. Deadline: April 15, 2008
The Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarships

  • Thirteen $10,000 scholarships are awarded to rising seniors. Deadline: May 30, 2008
The Arthur N. Wilson, MD Scholarship
  • One $5000 scholarship is awarded to a medical student who grew up in Southeast Alaska. Deadline: June 16, 2008
The Scholars Fund Award
  • Funds are collected for each medical school to distribute to deserving students. Deadline: July 1, 2008

Each Dean or Dean's designated can nominate students for the Minority Scholars Award and the Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship. For the Scholars Fund Award, the school chooses the recipients and sends the names of the recipients to the Foundation. The Foundation then sends the school its funds. Students can apply directly to the Foundation for the Arthur N. Wilson, MD, Scholarship.

Minority Scholars Award

The Minority Scholars Award is presented annually to 10 medical students from minority groups historically underrepresented in the medical profession by the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation and the AMA Minority Affairs Consortium. The $10,000 awards are offered with support from the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative.

The Minority Scholars Award recognizes personal commitment to improving minority health status, scholastic achievement and financial need among minority students. Eligible nominees are medical students from one of the following underrepresented minority groups: African American/Black, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino. Nominees must be a permanent resident or citizen of the Unites States in their first or second year at an accredited U.S. medical school.
 
Eligible candidates must be nominated by the medical school dean or dean’s designate. Each medical school may nominate up to two individuals for this award. The AMA Foundation must then receive completed nomination forms no later than April 16.

PI KAPPA OMEGA Chapter - ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA Sorority, Incorporated

DR. JOANN P. DaSILVA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

  1. African-American or Latina woman pursuing the Doctor of Medicine (MO), or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
  2. Permanent Resident of New York State and/or a student at a medical school in New York.
  3. Full-time enrolled student at an accredited medical school.
  4. Include with your application:
  • Proof of New York State permanent residency (if attending school out of state),
  • Essay of at least 500 words (no more than 750) in response to:
    Discuss the needs, and challenges of practicing medicine in an urban community; and solutions to these challenges.

Focus on ONE of the following three health issues:

  1. Cancer, including early detection and prevention
  2. HIV/AIDS
  3. Heart disease/ hypertension
  4. An official transcript in a sealed envelope.
NOTE: A Bursar's receipt (proof of enrollment) will be required prior to the disbursement of funds.

NMF is currently accepting applications for the GE/NMF Medical Scholars Program

Key initiatives of NMF include mentored externships that focus on improving the education and experience of minority medical students to improve the quality of service delivery for underserved populations. The GE/NMF Medical Scholars Program enhances the knowledge skills and competencies of health professionals serving a diverse client population nationally and globally and provides a program model of mentored externship experiences for 4th year US minority medical students and improves patient care in partner countries. GE/NMF Medical Scholars complete a two-month elective in Ghana, West Africa, focused on critical regional health care needs.

The GE Medical Scholars Elective in Ghana

A two-month (departing US after Match and returning prior to graduation) clinical/public health elective will be conducted in three districts in Ghana, focused on critical health care needs including HIV/AIDS, diabetes, tuberculosis, heart disease, cancer, and infant mortality. Prior to departure, all 10 Scholars will participate in an intensive orientation session in the US, followed by a briefing in Accra about the Ghana Health Service and their specific assignments. Scholars will have the opportunity to work at two sites. An individual project and a team project are required. Each of the GE/NMF scholars participating in the program authors a report detailing their various clinical findings and experiences. A team project, in collaboration with the district, is required. Team projects will focus on patient care. Students will also benefit from working with mentors.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eligible candidates must be underrepresented minority students enrolled in their fourth-year in an accredited U.S. medical school (MD or DO). Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement as evidenced in academic transcripts, faculty evaluations, receipt of special academic honors, fellowships, awards or induction into national medical honor societies; leadership as indicated by active participation in international health, community-based activities or initiation of innovative projects; and potential for distinguished contributions to medicine as indicated by participation in research, publications or unique clerkships.

Number and value of the awards:

Ten GE/NMF Scholars will be chosen. Transportation, living expenses and a scholarship of $5000 per student is provided to students. All student most complete the full program. Three runner-up will be chosen.

Application and Selection Criteria:

Students must be nominated by their medical school dean. Complete applications must be accompanied by a letter of nomination that fully explains the candidate’s academic and leadership accomplishments during medical school, an official academic transcript, a curriculum vitae and a personal statements of at least 500 words, written by the student, that discusses his or her motivation for a career in medicine and commitment to pursue a career in primary care, public or international health. Applicants are ranked by the International Advisory Board based on the strength of their medical school recommendations, personal statement, academic achievements and interviews. Transportation, living expenses and a scholarship of $5000 per student is provided to students.
