| Forensic Pathology is a subspecialty of Anatomic Pathology that deals more specifically with interpreting injuries and establishing a cause and manner of death.
Students will be involved with many aspects of Forensic Pathology. Medical examiners will be assigned cases daily between 8AM and 9AM.
At this time, students will observe various procedures involved in working up particular cases including communications with police, district attorneys and clinicians in order to gather the necessary information to certify the manner of death.
Students will observe and interact with the medical examiner while he/she performs autopsies. Autopsies will be started at approximately 9AM-9:30AM and each one will last several hours.
The goal of this elective it to provide students with an understanding of Forensic Pathology and the process of death certification (homicide, accident, suicide, therapeutic complication, natural and undetermined). A large variety of natural disease processes are observed regularly.
There will be additional teaching presentations as time permits and, when possible, students will accompany medical examiners to court to observe expert testimonies.
This elective is designed to give students some idea of how the medical-legal system works.
This elective is available between Labor Day and Memorial Day (not available during the summer).
Students who are interested should contact Dr. DeRoux during the school year to make arrangements. Dr. DeRoux may be reached at (718) 604-4432.
