African-American men who have been accepted into the first-year classes of accredited U.S. medical schools, and demonstrate exceptional need are eligible for these awards.

Dr. Joann P. DaSilva Memorial Scholarship Criteria

  • African-American or Latina woman pursuing the Doctor of Medicine (MO), or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
  • Permanent Resident of New York State and/or a student at a medical school in New York.
  • Full-time enrolled student at an accredited medical school.
  • Include with your application:
  • Proof of New York State permanent residency (if attending school out of state),
  • Essay of at least 500 words (no more than 750) in response to:
    • Discuss the needs, and challenges of practicing medicine in an urban community; and solutions to these challenges.

Focus on ONE of the following three health issues:

  • Cancer, including early detection and prevention
  • Heart disease/ hypertension
  • An official transcript in a sealed envelope.

NOTE: A Bursar's receipt (proof of enrollment) will be required prior to the disbursement of funds.
