Visiting Hours and Emergency Treatment

Student/Employee Health Service is located at 440 Lenox Road, Apt. 1S. The hours for routine consultation are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

When the SHS is closed the two alternatives for emergency care are the Emergency Services at the University Hospital of Brooklyn and the Kings County Hospital Emergency Room.

  1. In the event of an urgent medical problem, students should contact the Emergency Services Department at UHB or the Emergency Room nearest the student's location at the time. Your health insurance will be charged for emergency services.
  2. Serious emergencies (e.g. trauma or a situation requiring life support, among others) should be treated at the Kings County Hospital Emergency Room. The student should be brought to the attention of the admitting medical or surgical resident in the Emergency Room of Kings County Hospital. Transportation to the Emergency Room can be obtained by dialing 911 and asking for an ambulance if no other means is available. Students on campus who need transportation to the Emergency Room at Kings County Hospital or to University Hospital and do not need an ambulance are advised to call the Public Safety Department at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University at (718) 270-2626.
  3. If you are exposed to blood or body fluids, please see the "Exposure to Blood and Body Fluids" section of this website for detailed instructions.

If circumstances warrant students may, through the Downstate Health Sciences University telephone operator, contact the Director of the Student Health Service at her home. Students assigned to clerkships at outlying hospitals may seek medical care at the hospitals to which they have been assigned. However, it is advisable that they later inform the SHS of the emergency care received.

Students who are using Emergency Services either at UHB or at Kings County Hospital Emergency Room or another facility should bring their insurance cards in order to facilitate billing.

*The SHS provides complete primary care only to matriculated Downstate Health Sciences University students. These students have paid the Mandatory Student Health Fee. The non-matriculated students not paying this fee may receive required vaccines, tuberculin testing and health clearance for registration.

Husbands, wives, and children of students are not eligible for care in the Student Health Service. A student's husband, wife or child may obtain emergency medical care from the Emergency Room at Kings County Hospital or the Emergency Services in University Hospital. In such a case, the student is advised to inform personnel that he or she is a student and that the person who is ill is a relative.
